Every bathroom starts with the room stripped back to a sound surface, checked for damp and levelled where it needs it. Wet areas around the shower and bath are tanked before any tile goes on, because a bathroom is only as good as what's underneath it. From there I work out the layout so cuts fall in sensible places rather than against a wall you'll look at every day.

I tile floors, walls, shower enclosures and any niches or shelving in one visit where possible, so there's less disruption to the rest of the house. Grouting and silicone are finished last, once everything has had time to set properly, and the room is left clean and ready to use.

A kitchen is all edges: worktops, units, sockets, window reveals and the run of the wall behind the hob. The tiling is judged on how those meet, so the setting out matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Natural stone is treated differently to standard tiling from the start. Marble, travertine and other stone tiles are heavier, more porous and easier to chip or stain than ceramic, so they're cut, handled and fixed with adhesives and grout suited to the material rather than a general-purpose product.
